Garmin GPS systems are great if you don’t know how to find your way to an address but their maps often get outdated in a few years as new infrastructure is developed in your city. Many find the $80 update somewhat of a pinch in their pockets so here is a solution for those people!
Using this guide you will be able to update your Garmin GPS system to the latest (2010) map data, all you need is a little bit of patience and careful reading.
The 2011 Map Guide is now up.
What will you need?
- Garmin City Navigator 2010.40 (Method 1) OR 2010.40 Unlocked IMG File (Method 2)
- Garmin MapSource v6.15.7 & MapInstall v3.13.2
- Garmin Unlocker (available here)
- A Garmin GPS device plugged into your PC
Method 1 (Mapsource Install Instructions)
1) Run the setup file named “CNNANT2010Update_ENU.msi” from the “IMG” folder in your downloaded city navigator files.
2) Install the Garmin Mapsource software on your computer.
Note: The 2010.40 update also updates the version of MapInstall on your pc to v3.13.3. Before moving forward, downgrade to v3.13.2 using the following instructions:
- Remove all Mapinstall files the from the Garmin install directory (mostly located at C:\Garmin)
- Download Mapinstall v3.13.2 from the links provided & run the installer
- Launch Mapinstall and sync to device
3) Once the software in step 1 and 2 are installed, run the program named Mapsource from Start > All Programs > Garmin. Mapsource will show you a prompt upon launching it asking to unlock the maps, close this prompt window using the red X on the top right corner.
4) Now click on Utilities > Get Unit ID from the menu bar. The program will take a second and display your device’s unit ID (make sure your GPS is plugged into your computer to get this). Copy this unit # number and write it down elsewhere as a safe measure. Once you have the number written down, close this window.
5) Leave Mapsource running (minimize it) and open the Garmin unlocker you downloaded from the link provided before. Put the Unit ID code you wrote down in step 4 in the top most box of the garmin unlocker thats says “Enter your Unit ID here”.
6) Next, in the ‘Select Map Product‘ field select the last option of ‘custom maps’ and enter 450 when prompted and hit OK. If using the City Navigator North America 2010.20 maps enter 2005. If using the City Navigator North America 2010.30 maps enter 2051. If using the City Navigator North America 2010.40 maps enter 2201.

7) Now click on the Generate button located on the bottom of the window next to the Exit button. This will give you the unlock code, copy this code and keep it somewhere accessible. You can exit out of the unlocker now, its work is done.
8 ) Go back to the Mapsource window and from the Utilities menu and select Manage Map Products. Now click the ‘Unlock Regions’ Tab and press the ‘Add’ button. Paste the code you got in step 7 into the ‘Add Unlock Region’ dialog box’s first field, the second field is optional. Hit OK and you have unlocked the map product.

Now you can close Mapsource.
Note: Before moving foward, navigate to the Garmin folder on your device. An icon for your device will be under My Computer. In the Garmin folder you will find a file named “gmapprom”. Backup this file and then delete it from the Garmin device. If you cannot find the exact same file name, look for the biggest file in that folder (it can be anywhere from 500 MB – 1GB).
Now launch MapInstall from Programs > Garmin
9) Mapinstall will ask you for the regions on the map you want to install, choose your desired regions, hit next and then press Finish.
Depending on the amount of map data you choose to put on, the maps will transfer to your device between 30 mins – 1 hour. Once completed you will have the new 2010 maps on your GPS system, you can also check the maps version on your device via Settings > Maps > Map Info.
Method 2 (Unlocked IMG Instructions)
1. Connect your device to the computer.
2. Go into the Nuvi files and backup the file named “gmapprom.img” to your computer.
3. Delete the “gmapprom.img” file from the device.
4. Copy the unlocked “gmapprom.img” file that you downloaded into the device.
5. Restart your device and check your map info.
Having trouble with unlocking maps? Even with the right Mapsource version?
Mapsource might be causing an issue on your machine.
We have a fix for this :
- Navigate to your garmin installation directory (C:/Garmin/)
- Locate the Mapsource.exe file and rename it to MapsourceOLD.exe
- Download this replacement file, extract the contents and put it in the (C:/garmin) directory
The unlock code should now be accepted.
Want 3D map Data?
The 2010.40 3D Map Data can be found here
Simply drop that file onto your device memory or external memory and your 3D data should be loaded.
Enjoy the savings & drop us a line if you found this helpful.

Tried your hack and I got NT 2010.10 unlocked in Mapsource but it did not ask me what regions I want to install in my device. Do I just go into Mapsource and use the Selection tool to highlight all of North America and transfer the files to the device?

@BC Guy
If you open MapInstall like the tutorial suggests, it will let you choose the regions and then transfer them. Mapsource will not ask you which regions you want! MapInstall will.
Please read the tutorial carefully

Nice directions….the only thing I would add is that if you just install maps from MapSource and have an “outdoors” gps unit like the 60Cx, you don’t need to do the last step with the MapInstall program. Once you get it installed in Mapsource, you are good to go.

My Nuvi 205 maps took a crap. Said, “No routeable maps found.” I used this to FIX the problem, rather than spending hours on the phone with Garmin CSupport. Great write up. Thanx…

Map unlocks are device ID dependent. In our knowledge there is no “universal” map that works on all devices without unlocking.

I actually own a 2009 MicroSD that I bought on ebay. It is non-OEM, but it works great, and installs in any of my Nuvi devices. In fact, I actually used it to solve my MAP_PROBLEM that I was having before I installed the 2010.
The weird thing is I’ve tried to COPY the MicroSD onto another MicroSD, and can’t even get that to work. It does have a .unl file. I have no major need for it, but was very curious what is preventing me from copying to another MicroSD.
PS> I DID try to chg the MicroSD S/N to the same as the original and that didn’t seem to work either. Shrug!

I am trying to do step 2 “run the setup file named “CNNANT2010_10_Update_ENU.msi” but I coulnd’t figure out how to get to the “IMG” folder in my downloaded city navigator files. By “downloaded city navigator files”, do you mean “Garmin_City_Navigator_North_America_NT_2010_w__MapSource_6.13.7.4854683.TPB”? If so, I guess I don’t know what program to use to open this file. Help, please.

Yes the torrent download link is the one you download the file from…Once you have downloaded the torrent file you will have a folder in your download location named “Garmin_RMU_CNNANT2010″.
Look under that folder and you should find the IMG folder inside.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Update^^^^^^^^^^^
So I was having the same exact problem you had…
and maybe I was the only dense one, but I figure out what I was doing wrong
There are TWO different “Generate” buttons in the unlocker program.
There is one for a ‘Software unlock code” and a different one for a “Map Unlock Code”
I was generating and using the wrong unlock code.. so I was geting the “map product not installed ” error. Once I used the correct generated code everything worked like a charm.
Thanks.
I thought Id share this with anyone else having the same problem…

Wow! Super easy and super clear, glad I found this write up as a lot of the other ones are too convoluted.
I have to admit though I did get slightly confused with the Note: at step 8). I found the file named gmapprom.sum but it was only 1k file size, the largest file was named gmapsupp at 1GB. So I contimplated for a while which one I should delete from the Garmin directory, but I decided to just stick with the instruction and only deleted the gmapprom.sum file and everything was fine.
Thanks again for making it super easy.

Also does this hack update all the POI info as well?

It took me a few tries because the maps weren’t unlocking correctly. When I installed on the GPS, it said it “can’t unlock maps” I finally got it when both tabs in map utilities show unlocked. See this pic: http://imgshack.info/images/rt.....pww93x.jpg

I would like to note, that instead of just deleting the file mentioned in the instructions. I copied the file first to my desktop and then deleted it. Some might say I’m a bit paranoid, but I wanted to be able to go back to my old maps just in case something went wrong. It took about 30 minutes to copy to the computer.
The step by step worked like a charm. I used these steps to update a Kenwood DNX8120 and a Nuvi 205.
Thanks again.

If you have a C330/340 you have to have a micro SD card to fit in the slot because the internal memory is not large enough on our C330. It now has my 2008 maps on the internal hd and the 2010 maps on the memory card. Skip the part where you have to delete and back up the files if you have a memory card and a C330/340. It will work perfect! Thanks a ton!

I had the same problem as this guy, with my first transfer. I then “repaired” the program from step 2, and only installed the maps local to me, and it seems to be working now. I will re-do it later adding the full north america map and see if the whole thing works. Thanks for the update! (though, unfortunately, the ONE NEW ROAD right near my house STILL isnt updated, but that’s not the fault of this tutorial, haha. )
Thanks!

Been looking for this all week.
Just one question, are the new maps in the form of dozens of.img files on your hard drive before the install to the GPS? If so, do they become one “gmapprom” file when installed?
My nuvi 250W has about 1.4Gb of internal memory. Will that be enough for all regions?
Thanks

I too want to say “Thanks!”.
The result of upgrading to NA NT 2010 per the instructions on the link above is a single file: gmapsupp.img, which is 1.118Gb in size with all maps (regions) selected. It can easily fit on my nuvi 250W 1.4Gb internal memory, but I chose a SD chip instead. Too bad it’s “appearing” title in
I have not done this, but it would seem straight forward to rename this to gmapprom.img and just replace your original map file directly to you GPS unit (after backing up the original, of course!!!). This would put the new map into internal memory.
One question left! Should I leave both the 2009 AND 2010 maps checked in my Garmin 250W, or unselect the 2009 map, leaving only the 2010 selected???
Thanks again!
Thanks again!

I lied, a second question ; )
How do I get Mapinstall to select all of the maps (regions)??? I spent a half an hour clicking on the displayed regions, zooming in to spot cities, to make sure I had everything this update had to offer selected. Come on, got to be a better way, but for a $60 savings for 30 minutes of work, I’m OK with it. : ))))

The above is important. The first unit I updated worked like a charm, when I attempted to do a 2nd Garmin unit, I kept getting the error as noted above. Guess I got a little quick (cocky) with performing the process since my 1st attempt went so smoothly. I was using the wrong “GENERATE” button in Garmin Unlock program. If anyone else has this problem, make sure you are using the “GENERATE” button at the very bottom of the unlock program for “map unlocking” NOT “software unlocking”
Hope this helps someone else out as the original post quoted did for me.

You can uncheck the 2009 maps option. It is not needed since you have the 2010 maps now.
When you download the torrent file, it will make a folder in your default download location with those files in it.

Excellent hack. Thank you so much. Followed all of the instructions and was able to update both my Garmin 750 and 350 without issue and both are functioning normally.
One thing.
The unlocker is the key generator for anyone who might have gotten confused by trying to use the folder that showed the bat and exe files. It’s not that folder.
Also for anyone showing that their Garmin is connected but not showing up in MY Computer (assuming you’re running Windows) it’s possible that the drive letter Windows wants to assign for your Garmin has already been assigned to one of your other drives. Just a matter of going into System Administration and temporarily assigning different drive letters to your DVD or other storage devices (use … letters X, Y or Z) . (CONTROL PANEL –> ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS —>COMPUTER MANAGEMENT —>STORAGE—>(double click on) DISK MANAGEMENT—>which will bring up all drives and their currently-assigned drive letters — then right click on the drives showing in the lower grey boxs and use the “Change Drive Letter” from the right click menu. Make the drive letter changes, close it up and reboot your computer and leave the Garmin connected.
When you arrive back at your desktop and double click on My Computer you should now see your Garmin device assigned one of the lower drive letters ie.. D, E, F, etc… Once you complete the map update and disconnect the Garmin from your computer, don’t forget to go back in and reassign the drive letters to your original layout or preference.

I’m new to this so bare with me. I actually got though and understood the procedure. That said, here is my problem/questions. I recently purchased a Zumo 550 and it came with a 2009 NT disk supplied. When I registered the device I got a update to the 2010 NT maps. So this leaves me with an unregistered, locked 2009 disc (although it is assigned to the zumo with a unlock code supplied). I have it loaded into mapsouce and it does show locked and it cannot be unlocked with the supplied code since it knows the zumo is the owner to the software. What I’m attempting to do is load this to my e-Trex handheld outdoor onto the SD card. So, here are my questions, etc. First, I know that I cannot load the update 2010 NT I have now to the e-Trex. I was in hopes of unlocking the d2009 disk I have to make life easy. As I stated above I went through all the steps to get a unlock code telling the unlock gen. it is going to the e-Trex with id # etc. and I got an unlock code for the 2009 NT disk., but with no sucess unlocking it. Question one, any idea if I can use this disk and somehow unlock it, rather then have to load a torrent file. Secondly, I assume I canot have two 2010 NT files loaded in mapsource? So the bottom line is I want to have a NT map on my e-Trex, I don’t care if it is 2009/2010, which ever I can get loaded an unlocked. I’m looking for any help you can supply. Thanks for your time in reading this and repsonding.

This will go perfectly AS LONG AS YOU FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS EXACTLY, but remember to check the Garmin site to see if your device is capable of using the map.
This hack is easy compared to some others out there for other software. Just don’t try to interpret what the instructions say; do exactly as the instructions tell you, specifically the part about backing up the gmapprom.img file. If you don’t, and the install screws up, you could brick your GPS unit.

You are truly a lifesaver. Not only did you show me how to update North America, but the tutorial taught me how to use MapSource properly. So, I was able to get an unlocked European map and upload both on my NUVI 680 – now I’m all set for Europe. There seems to be some confusion with MapSource (used to find your serial number and unlock the map – you MUST FIRST INSTALL THE MAP BEFORE UNLOCKING), and using MapSource (a different program in the last step).
You really don’t need to use MapInstall, since MapSource can do everything once you watch the tutorial you’ll understand. Best of luck to all, and thank you so much for this. It’s outrageous how much there companies try to get more money after they sell you the device. I paid about $700 for my GPS just 2 years ago, and now it goes for about $150 if you can find it…

Just successfully installed new City Navigator North America 2010.20 maps. The map id is different used in step 6. It is 2005 instead of 450. On my Nuvi 260, there was not enough space for all of the maps even after deleting the gmapprom.img file. They require 1229.2 MB. I copied the original gmapprom.img back where it was and installed an 8 GB SDHC card (buy.com $17-$20). For step 9, I did this:
9) In MapSource, fence in (or select) the entire map. In the bottom left, it should say 135 Map(s) – 1229.2 MB. Click on ‘Map Set Name:’ located at the bottom left of screen. Uncheck ‘Autoname the map set’. Change the ‘Map Set Name:’ to ALL. Click Ok. ALL is the factory name when your unit comes from Garmin. On the menu bar, click Transfer, Send to Device. If you are copying the files to the memory card change the Device to the drive letter, mine was Removable Disk (E:\). When you view your map under Map Info, it will say [1] All instead of [1] Alaska, Alberta, etc. I used MapSource instead of MapInstall because you can change the Map Set Name in Mapsource.

I found a nice program to tell you your Map ID (FID) # of installed maps called MapSetToolKit.
http://cypherman1.googlepages.com/home
After installing the map, you can run this program to tell you the MAP or FID #.
Also, I figured out the Hex # in the .TYP filename is the MAP ID #. In XP, it’s located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GARMIN\Maps\City Navigator North America NT 2010.20.gmap. In Vista, it’s located in C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\Maps\City Navigator North America NT 2010.20.gmap. There is a file named ________.TYP (I00007D5.TYP for 2010.20). Take the last 4 characters (07D5), plug it into Calculator as Hex and convert to Decimal for the MAP ID (2005).

You need to get your Unit ID from Mapsource for the unlocker. Plug your Garmin to your PC with a USB cable.

Absolutely works! I updated my Nuvi 350 flawlessly and it is working perfectly.
However I’m encountering a problem trying to load the Europe map. (I’ve downloaded the europe file from the link given in previous comments). Since I don’t have the europe map installed, running the xxxxupdate.msi generated a message stating some files are not found. Mapsource also shows no Europe maps installed.
How should I proceed? Many many thanks!!!!

Ok, I’ve gone through this a few times now. Followed all the instructions.
I’ve got an eTrex Vista HCx. This has no on-board memory, and must use an SD card to load things to.
Everything works fine, except when I try to load maps to the device. It says that the maps are not unlocked for the device. I’m tried to load them to the SD card directly, and that didn’t work either. It built the maps fine, but when I installed the card in the unit, and turned it on, said it couldn’t unlock the maps. I used the proper Unit ID for the device in Keygen. Any ideas???
Drew August 24th, 2009 at 8:43 pm

Does the eTrex device have a usb port? My nuvi 260 has built in memory (shows up as D: drive) and an 8GB SDHC memory card (shows up as E: drive). I installed the maps to the SD card with the SD card inserted in the nuvi 260 while it is connected to the computer with the usb cable. See my 2nd post above dated Aug 11.

Actually solved the problem. Turns out I fat-fingered the Unit ID # when I generated the unlock code. Ran through, did it again, and then changed the name of the code key in regedit to reflect the new unlock code. Also put it in the gmapsupp.unl file. Fired up MapSource and looked in the Unlock Regions tab. There were two, one w/ the old unlock code, and one w/ the new unlock code. Deleted the old one, and the new one worked fine. Built the maps, loaded them onto my SD card (much faster than through the device USB), plugged the SD card in, and all was good!!!
Anybody that tries to uninstall and reinstall City Nav that has been unlocked, needs to change the value of that Code key under HKEY_Users in regedit to reflect the new unlock code. Otherwise, it’s not going to work.

I own a Garmin Nüvi 265T (bought in US few weeks ago) with North America maps.
I am in Brazil now. The 265T was successfully used while in US up to the moment I got to the airport.
I downloaded and (by trial-and-error) I managed to install City Navigator Brazil NT 2010.10 (MapID = 404) as follows:
- your tutorial to the letter up to step 7.
- launched MapSource Unlock Wizard and followed its instructions to unlock the maps on the PC.
- back to your tutorial from step 8 (inclusive) till the end.
Mapsource states that North America and Brazil maps are unlocked on the PC and they are unlocked on the 265T too.
The problem is that even in completely open areas the bars indicating the satellite signal level are at zero and I am always getting the Trouble Finding Satellites message from the 265T.
Any idea of what is happening and how to fix it?

I didn’t realize until I read some of the comments and other people had the same problem. When you try to unlock and it still says it’s locked. It’s because there are 2 generated key codes. It’s just the other generate button is usually located where the Okay and Cancel buttons are on the bottom right. So yeah it works fine now. Anyways, I haven’t noticed anything new since upgrading. The things that are newly built in my area are still not showing up on the GPS. Also, I noticed when I checked my recently found history………..Theres chinese lettering in the ends of the things now. What’s up with that!?

just did this on my Kenwood DNX9140. Works great! I’m glad I was able to get these updates.
For anyone with this unit:
Start with Unit turned off
Plug a Mini USB cable into the back of the unit
Hook up the other end of the USB cable to a laptop
Power unit on and go to the nav screen.
It will ask you to select USB Mode or Garmin Mode
Select Garmin Mode
Use MapInstall to put maps onto unit.
Hooking the unit up was the hardest part to install the maps for me. I didn’t know I had to restart the unit. After you get it all hooked up, this guide is pretty straight forward. It’s also useful to keep the USB cable hooked up to your unit and run it into the glove compartment for future updates too. You can also add vehicle icons and voices through Garmin Mode.
hope this helped

HI ,
From the comments I understood when we install the file “CNNANT2010Update_ENU.msi” from the “IMG” folder , And open the Mapsource we should get in Utilities -> Manage Map products we should get “North America NT 2010-1” , but all I was getting is City Navigator North America 2010.20 , and only code 2005 is working and for rest of them it shows as “map product not installed”, Still I went ahead and installed all the regions selected through mapinstall but now the problem is that when I go to Map info on the devise it only shows CN North America NT 2010.20 -> New Brunswick , Is that mean maps for all the others were delete? ( Even though I selected all the regions in US and the memory is as shown as ok ).
My first question will be why I was shown “City Navigator North America 2010.20” instead of “North America NT 2010-1” I am using the correct file specified on the instructions.
MY second question will be why only one state is shown when I install all other regions as well…

The gmapsupp.img I created on the 2G SD card using map source. Its mapsets I put together from Europe 2010.2, North America 2010.2, Mexico 2010, using Mapsource. The problem is which Map ID do you use when generating the key for the .unl file? I have tried each Map ID seperately and it didnt work. I then checked using Hex Editor to find that all 3 Key codes that were sucessfully unlocked in Mapsource, are in the .img file. I tried to add all 3 key codes to the .unl. First with no spaces, then spaces between each key, the carriage return after each key. Still “cant unlock map”….help??!

But then you say no unlock is needed you can just transfer to your device. Is this second part referring to the 2010.30? Does that mean you do not need all the other steps as well? Or, just skip the part with the unlocker? When I initially downloaded .30, no folders were downloaded so I started again and used .20.

Hey gps Mike, you have to go into the North America 2010.30 folder, right click on gmapsupp and click extract files. But first you have to have the winRAR program installed, because that is what you will extract it with. Let it finish extracting then you will have a gmapsupp folder with a gmapsupp file in it. You have to delete the gmapsupp file on your gps and replace it with this one. Let me know if this worked.

If you are installing the 2010.30 map then you have to create a garmin folder on your sd card and then put the extracted gmapsupp file in that folder. Hope it works

Hey kitty, did you download the 2010.30 from garmin site? If so the it should install itself if you run the program. You should also see the map in mapsource and mapinstall and then install it right from there

To clarify things… If you are new to this updating method, do the update for 2010.20 first following the guide. Then you will only need to transfer the downloaded 2010.30 update file later on without any unlocks.

It “should”
I bought the lifetime map update and although I can download the .exe files, can’t get them to run.
I spent over an hour on the phone with Garmin tech support this week, and still everytime I get to the end of the install (after it extracts and gets you to OK the license agreement) I get a message that the update can’t connect properly to the Garmin server…and it quits.
Maybe my computer is just too old since utorrent doesn’t seem to work right either…or it may be that my ISP blocks such things.
So I’m looking for another option…….
Thanks!!

I stumble across this thread while searching for solution to a garmin nuvi 200 which i bough today for 20 bucks, i also have a nuvi 760 which has a copy of the 2010.10 north American/Mexico maps which i got awhile go already cracked, so for units which have 1.2gb internal memory or more is just a matter of transferring the img file and your all set, but for units such as the nuvi 200 this not possible without an sd card. I have a couple questions, first off what are benefits of installing version 2010.20 and version 2010.30? also since the 2010.30 is already unlocked can you not directly go to version 2010.30, as oppose to loading 2010.20 then 2010.30?, am downloading the 2010.30 version which i intend to load onto the internal memory on the nuvi 200, will see how that goes.

C330 OWNERS!!!
Get a 2gb SD card
Download the pre-unlocked 2010.30 maps, Add a new folder on a 2gb SD card called “Garmin”, Copy the file gmapprom.img to the Garmin folder on the SD card via a card reader or cell phone that acts as a reader, Right click the file and rename it “gmapsupp.img”, shut down the USB connection. Then install the card in your C330 and power up. Go to the “wrench at the bottom”/maps/map info, if all is right you will see two maps, uncheck the old maps version by clicking on it.
You just saved 50 bones…good for us!!!

————————————————————————————————————————————————-
So you downloaded them via utorrent? if you downloaded the unlocked maps, there is no need to extract, If you used utorrent, just right click the file and go to “open containing folder”. You should have a file called gmapprom.img that you downloaded in that folder. Make a folder in your SD card called “Garmin”, then save the gmapprom.img file to it. It will take 20 or 30 minutes. Then RENAME the file gmapsupp.img. Then follow my instructions above to un-select the old maps in your C330

Moe,
I would assume so, I’m guessing the pre-unlocked files might have been added to the write up at a later date or something. If the 760 has a SD slot, I would assume you don’t even need to do step 9, providing you have the ability to un-select your maps like on the C330. In other words, If you use your SD for POI’s then you should probably do step 9.

Patrick G. December 12th, 2009 at 6:35 pm

Okay, since the instructions aren’t clear, here’s what I did:
1. Downloaded gmapprom.img from the “2010.30 pre-unlocked files” link above. Using that link downloads “gmapprom.img”, NOT an extractable archive containing “CNNANT2010Update_ENU.msi” within an IMG folder, as the instructions above indicate.
2. Backed up the existing gmapprom.img file on my Nuvi 260 and then deleted it.
3. Copied the gmapprom.img downloaded from the “2010.30 pre-unlocked files” link above to the Garmin and rebooted it.
4. When I go to Map Info on the Garmin it reports “north america 2010.30 unlocked”
Can someone please confirm these steps were correct and I do not need to go run MapInstall from Programs > Garmin.

We do not see how the instructions are not clear.
The guide is mainly for the mapsource method so people can choose what maps they need if they want to customize their maps based on space limitations on their devices.
The pre-unlocked files were added to the guide to make your life easy if you do not want to customize.

Like Labrat said, if you want to customize the maps,(which you are trying to do) then you need to use Mapinstall. This allows you to customize the existing software in the GPS. Otherwise you need to save the gmapprom.img to a SD card and rename it to gmapsupp.img and un-select your old maps on your GPS. I personally think the instructions are the best on the internet. But as with all hacks, you gotta do some of your own thinking.
Patrick G. December 13th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
(Quote)
Explain to me how I’m trying to customize the maps – I’m not understanding that. My goal is to simply upgrade the existing 2008 North America map on the Garmin with the 2010 version, which I understood to be contained within the 2010.30 file. In addition, if I attempt to use MapInstall to install 2010.30, it tells me there is no map installed. I presume this is because 2010.30 is simply the .img file and does not contain an msi installer. So, essentially there are no instructions for installing the 2010.30 file on this page. I just guessed, and am looking for confirmation that simply replacing the existing gmapprom.img file on the Garmin with the 2010.30 gmapprom.img file is all that is necessary, since it seems to have done the trick.
resinbelly December 13th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
(Quote)
yes, it seems to be that simple & your presumption would be correct, the files that you downloaded were pre-unlocked, therefore it is a complete unlocked 2010 map for all of North America. As I understand it, Mapinstall allows you to customize the maps from 2010.20 and 2010.30 for your desired region(based on available memory on your GPS) or for international maps that you may need. There are instructions for the 2010.30 maps, but not the 2010.30 pre-unlocked maps. Labrat said they were added later to make it easier, aren’t they nice around here?
Sounds like your up and running with 2010 maps. Great Job!!

Just a heads up, the “unlocked” one does not contain Mexico. That is why it is a little smaller. The full version which you can use with mapinstall is the full North America including Mexico. I have used both with about 10 different GPS’s including Nuvi’s, StreetPilots, etc, and they both work fine. If you all are not getting it to work, the issue is behind the keyboard, not with this procedure or software…
Kudo’s to whomever keeps this site up.
My only complaint is with Garmin themselves, there is still lots of inaccuracies with the maps, There are several new (within the last year) roads in my area that when I drive on them it shows me driving through the woods. I feel sorry for the people that actually pay for this, what a ripoff.

Thanks so much this is truly awesome!
1. Download Bit Torrent from the company’s website
2. Open the unlocked file in the link below – (it took several hours for me). It’s called 2010.30 pre-unlocked files
3. Once the file is downloaded/seeded, right click on it. You will see a filed called gmapprom.img that is 1.2 m kbs
4. Hook up your USB cable to the Nuvi.
5. Go into the Nuvi files and save the old file from 2008 or 9 (gmapprom.img) to your desktop for backup.
6. Delete the file in the Nuvi folder there that is gmapprom.sum.
7. Copy and paste the new gmapprom.img into your nuvi file in place of the old one.
8. Restart…
9. Check your map info & it will tell you if it updated ok

pzin: You have to install the software in step 1 first(i.e. running the file CNNANT2010Update_ENU.msi from the Garmin City Navigator 2010.20 or 2010.30 files). Once you do that the mapsource software will install fine w/o that error.
I was playing around and getting ahead of myself while waiting for City Navigator files to download and experienced the same thing.
Hope this helps.

Silly question, but I’m confused. On 1) Run the setup file named “CNNANT2010Update_ENU.msi” from the “IMG” folder in your downloaded city navigator files.
The torrent file comes with 25 .rar files. (part01.rar to part25.rar) when extracted and file names are all the same. Question: do I have to extract all of the files?
I only extracted the first one and was able to find CNNANT2010Update_ENU.msi, but not sure if I need to extract the rest or if there’s a program that will compile all 25 rar files into one.
thanks for the help!

You dont have to re-install it for each nuvi, what you have to do is get the serial # for each device, and run the unlocker and input the codes into mapsource BEFORE you upload it to the device. I do not think there is any limit to the number of devices you can unlock for. You can also have older versions of the maps on there, and older codes. But from what I have seen, you can only edit/upload the LATEST version of the maps installed.
Also for the people with older 1GB streetpilots, you have 2 options:
1. buy a SDCard and copy the maps to it (preferred method)
2. Using mapsource edit the map to include about 930MB worth of maps (you wont be able to get the whole U.S.) in your area or what states you will most likely use. Using mapsource, do a send to device, send to a USB drive. Then use the command line version of webupdater to upload it to the device. There is a good website about this procedure. I have used it for several older streetpilots which we did not want to buy SD cards for or for devices WITHOUT SD card slots.
http://www.smellybiker.com/for.....&t=886
3. buy a new GPS
Just out of curiousity, when should we expect .40? March or April or so?

ratbag,
You got all you needed. It is a single unlocked file that contains the map data – no other folders or files needed. Just replace the file on your GPS that has the same file name with this new one. But, and I emphasize it, make a backup of that original file on your computer before you remove it – in case something goes wrong (or is corrupted) with the new file. Actually it might be best to load the new file onto an SD card (if your GPS takes memory cards) and select the latest map from your GPS map setup. If you do put it on the SD card rename the file to: gmapsupp.img. This actually lets you compare the two maps to see changes in a given area. This is the way I do it and it seems the safest.

. Glad I could be of help.
The unlocked file doesn’t need any of the steps that are required for the full (locked) download. The instructions above are only for the full torrent DL – which needs to be unlocked and uses MapSource to select the map areas wanted and generate the .img file. I found that the .img file generated by selecting all the map segments from the locked version was a little larger than the already unlocked .img file – think someone posted that the Mexico roads weren’t shown. I don’t plan on driving in Mexico anytime soon

Second, you will need a program to decompress the files.
Then the instructions worked well on my Nuvi200.

Will,
Am not sure that Map Source can recognize .img files – actually that is what Map Source generates by selecting the map regions you want and exporting them to either the GPS unit or an SD card. No need to use Map Source with the unlocked maps. Just replace the .img file on your GPS unit with the downloaded one (make sure you back up the original one) or rename it to gmapsupp.img and load it on an SD card (if your GPS takes SD cards). Then select the latest map with the Setup map selection in the GPS unit.

But try a different USB port first if you have others.

Also, I do not get speed limits on my 1300, is there a file(s) on the 205w that I can copy onto the 1300 to give me this display? I have read that the speed limit display is part of the map software but as I mentioned I have the updated maps, but no speed limit displays.

Using the “2010.30 unlocked” files copied to a 2GB microSD card, the update seems to work fine on my old StreetPilot i3 – checking the map version shows “2010.30 unlocked.”
Copying the same file to another 2GB SD card and installing it into my nuvi 200, however, doesn’t seem to work. The 200 doesn’t “see” the new maps, only the existing 2009 maps in the built-in 1GB memory. The “2010.30 unlocked” file is too large to fit into the 200′s internal memory.
In both cases, the file on the external SD card is named “gmapsupp.img” – the nuvi 200 does have an existing gmaprom.img (and .sum and .unl) file on it.
Downloading the full 2010.30 MapSource files to see if that makes a difference.

I followed the instruction but didn’t really work. I had problems beyond step 7.
In fact, step one failed (CNNANT2010Update_ENU.msi) umm…where do you get that? All I got was the img file which I had problem opening with many software.
However, all you really need to do is download ’2010.30 pre-unlocked files .img’ and copy it over.
What I did in the end was downloaded ’2010.30 pre-unlocked files’, backup the entire unit, format it to FAT32, put back evreything from backup except the img file is the new one and everything was working well.
If I delete the old img off the unit and copy the new one over, it says I am out of memory, even after I empty recycle bin and reconnect the unit. But if I format it first, it seems to work on my Garmin Nuvi 260w. Also, when the next update comes out 2012??, this might not work as I am left with 11MB of free space only. If more roads are build in the future, the new update will be huge and might not fit older GPS. Mine is a 2006 and has 1.2GB of space. I suppose the new ones have more capacity?

Easy Easy Easy to follow, if you know how to read.
Garmin Nuvi 370 updated quickly with the 2010.30 pre-unlocked file.
Since the 370 had plenty of space for all the maps in the file, I just did as instructed:
1. Back up the gmapprom.img file to your PC before deleting it.
2. Copy the new gmapprom.img to the unit and presto. That Easy…
Of course it takes time to download and move files of that size, but that is still just moving files around and is very easy.
Directory structure on the Nuvi370 placed the gmapprom.img file in a Garmin directory and just appended a 1 to the secondary map on the unit. e.g. Europe Map file was gmapprom1.img
While in there I backed up the help and voice files that were not english, then deleted those as well.
No other reason other than this site gave me the confidence on how moving files around is just that, moving files around.
Thanks a bunch….

Rich:
Download the unlocked maps. 2010.30 unlocked. Use utorrent and you should be downloading the .img file.
After download:
1. Attached your Nuvi 265 to your computer
2.Open My Computer and you should see the gmpaprom.img file under the Garmin folder
3. Copy that file first and save it to your computer
4. Delete the gmapprom file under the Garmin folder (it will take long)
5. Paste the gmapprom file from your downlaod on torrent into the same Garmin folder where you deleted the old version and everything should work

okay if you download a .RAR file, use winRAR to unzip the file and you should get an IMG file.

Thanks, this post really helped me out. I had downloaded the 2010.40 maps but had to downgrade mapinstall to v3.13.2 (avail from Garmin website) to synch the maps onto my nuvi 360. The 2010.40 maps came with mapinstall v3.13.3 and that wouldn’t recognize the unlock code.

If you downloaded the 2010.30 (2051) files then you will not see the CNNANT2010Update_ENU.msi. This is the unlock version. You simply need to delete the old gmapprom.img on your GARMIN directory and replace it with the new gmapprom.img you downloaded from torrent. Attached your garmin to your PC. Click on My Computer and you will be able to see your Garmin unit and the folder wehere the gmapprom is.

Thanks for that info. I used Vuse and it didn’t work with the gmapprom.img. Should have used torrent as you have just indicated. I will uninstall everything and start from scratch using the torrentto down load for the 2010.30 pre-unlock version. I’ll try again.

The new mapsource v 6.15.9
If this release of mapsource is installed on your pc, you wont be able to unlock these maps with the Jetmouse keygen…but have no fear we have a fix for this :
- Navigate to your garmin installation directory (C:/Garmin/)
- Locate the Mapsource.exe file and rename it to MapsourceOLD.exe
- Download this replacement file, extract the contents and put it in the (C:/garmin) directory
The unlock code should now be accepted.

Kenwood DNX 5120
After different failed attempts and almost 30 dvdr/cdrs wasted, i was finally able to figure out how to update the map on the Kenwood DNX 5120 using the unlocked 2010.30 maps.
Steps:
1. You need to plug your laptop to the mini-USB port at the back of your Kenwood unit
2. After unplug, click on the NAV screen on your unit and choose USB Mass Storage
3. This will give you access to the Garmin folder of your Kenwood unit
4. Simply copy the gmapprom.img file from torrent and replace the one on the Garmin folder on the unit. (copy and save the old one first – just in case)
5. Or you can use mapsource and this hack if you dont want the entire map on your unit.
P.S. – It takes a long time to backup the old file and install the new file (about 1 to 2 hrs)
FINALLY !!! THERE IS A GOD !!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS HACK !!!

I posted how I got around this in my comment here – http://www.haklabs.com/2009/th.....ent-102089 – had the exact same problem with 10.40. The version of mapinstall (v3.13.3) it comes with needs to be downgraded (v3.13.2).
Steps to get v3.13.2 mapinstall running:
1) backup/remove all mapinstall files the from c:\garmin directory (if you don’t delete the older version it will not install over newer version)
2) download mapinstall v3.13.2 from http://anonym.to/?http://www8......sp?id=3291
3) run mapinistall installer
4) launch mapinstall and sync to device

Double Check your version of mapsource. I had to go in garmin and delete my version of mapsource (v6 15.9) and reinstall the old version (v6 15.7) to get it to work. 2010.40 is now installed and working fine!

Mike,
I am positive it is 6.15.7. This is the first time I have installed Garmin mapsource software on this PC so there are no residual files from previous software. I followed the instructions verbatim. I ran CNNANT2010_40Update_ENU.msi instead of CNNANT2010Update_ENU.msi as I could not find that particular file. Does it matter that I am using Windows 7 or a Garmin Nuvi 760?

I posted this earlier today but apparently my links flagged it for moderation and it’s still sitting there. I had the same problem as others for 10.40 install. The version of mapinstall needs to be downgraded for this to work. Following these instructions the version of mapinstall I had installed was v3.13.3. This needs to be downgraded to v3.13.2. You can find out the version it is by clicking the icon in the top-left of mapinstall and going to “about mapinstall”.
Steps to get v3.13.2 mapinstall running:
1) backup/remove all mapinstall files the from c:\garmin directory (if you don’t delete the older version it will not install over newer version)
2) download mapinstall v3.13.2 from garmin’s website
3) run mapinistall installer
4) launch mapinstall and sync to device
No problems after that.

Garmin C330 Map Update Issue! I followed all of the steps correctly. I added an SD card to give my GPS enough memory to hold the CN North American NT 2010.20. The only step that I skipped was deleting the “GMAPPROM” from my GPS unit as windows would not recognize it. Now, I read that others had skipped this step w/ the C330 and havent had any problems. My GPS is working correcly. The installation went smooth and once completed I thought everything was great. Started to use the GPS and I found a continuous issue. I am from Western Michigan and when I input an address, and I choose to use the CN North America NT 2010.20 instead of the City Navicator North America NT v8, it always wants to take me to the Indiana boarder and then back up to my destination. Then, I noticed that if I used the CN North America NT v8 instead of the CN North American 2010.20 it would only sometimes do this. So, I took the SD card out tried it and now, I do not have the problem but this is because I am only using the original Map, CN North America NT v8. So, the old map is working fine but when I insert the SD card with the New map, it wants to send me to Indiana and back. I have tried to turn off all avoidances to see if this would make a difference but that didnt work either. Any thoughts?

Just use the link for Mapinstall v3.13.2 in the second line of the “What You Will Need” at the beginning of this page. Just downloaded it this morning and it worked fine. Also you have to be sure you are using MapSource v6.15.7 and not v6.15.9. I pulled my hair out for a few hours until I read the note about using v6.15.7. Backed down to that and immediately the 2010.40 map showed unlocked.
