Garmin 2012 Map Update

Garmin GPS systems are great if you don’t know how to find your way to an address but their maps often get outdated in a few years as new infrastructure is developed in your city.

Find the $99 update somewhat of a pinch? Here is a solution for you!

Using this guide you will be able to update your Garmin GPS system to the latest (2012) map data for North America, all you need is a little bit of patience and careful reading. This guide can also be followed to update maps from other countries but you will need to locate the map files of your country on your end.

REQUIRED ITEMS

Garmin City Navigator 2012.40 (torrent)
Garmin Unlocked IMG File | 2012.40 (torrent)
A file archiver/extractor like 7-Zip
Garmin Unlocker (Pass:haklabs.com)
A GPS device plugged into your PC

FAQ

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN METHOD 1 & 2

Method 1 – To be used if you would like to customize the maps on your unit to specific areas.

Method 2 – To be used if you want the entire map data available on your unit (novice friendly)

WHAT ARE TORRENTS?

Don’t know how to use .torrent files? We won’t judge you (maybe)!

Follow these instructions to get started.

Method 1 (MapSource Install Instructions)

Based on feedback from our visitors, we have worked on simplifying this method for an easy install process. The instructions for 2012 MapSource install now look different from previous releases.

The 2012.10 MapID is 2425 | 2012.20 MapID is 2484 | 2012.30 MapID is 2508 | 2012.40 MapID is 2584

Note: The downloaded files contain map source, lane assist full (all areas), and 3d map unlocked full (all areas) in individual compressed archives, so select only what you need, Garmin MobileXT users don’t need the 3d map or the lane assist files.

Once the files have been downloaded, extract them as you will need to choose the appropriate folders based on your choice below.

Choose one of the following options:

Option One (Unlocked Maps)

1. Extract the contents of the torrent you downloaded using 7-Zip or any other unrar-tool

2. Open the folder “…/2012.10 Source/” and run “install.exe”. This will install the maps to: “C:\Documents and Settings\(USER)\Application Data\Garmin\Maps”

3. Once it finishes unlocking all maps, MapSource will automatically open (be sure to wait until command prompt window closes)

4. From the toolbar, select “map tool” (it’s to the left of the magnifying glass with a ‘+’ sign)

5. In the main map window, select the areas you want to transfer to your device. (left click on each area you want to copy to your device, it will turn a pink color signifying it has been selected)

6. Once you have selected all the areas you want copied to your device, go to the options menu and left click on “Transfer”. Scroll down to “Send To Device” and click on it

7. Connect your device to your computer (if you have not already)

8. Click on the button “find device”. Once your device shows up in the select box, choose “Send”.

Option Two (Unlock using *.UNL file)

1. Copy the folder “\2012.10 Source\City Navigator North America NT 2012.10.gmap\” to “C:\Documents and Settings\(USER)\Application Data\Garmin\Maps”

2. Run the install.exe file from  ”\map source 6.15.6.0\install.exe”

3. Launch MapSource and choose the maps that you would like on your device on follow the on screen instructions

4. Use “\garmin map unlocker\unlocker.exe” to generate your maps unlock code. Alternatively, you may also use the Garmin Unlocker provided at the beginning of this guide.

Once completed, if you want to remove Mapsource files from your system:

Delete > C:\Documents and Settings\(USER)\My Documents\My Garmin
Delete > C:\Documents and Settings\(USER)\Application Data\Garmin\Maps

Method 2 (Unlocked IMG)

Use either Part A or Part B depending on your choice:

Part A | Internal Memory

1. Connect your device to the computer.

2. Go into the Nuvi files and backup the file named “gmapprom.img” to your computer.

3. Delete the “gmapprom.img” file from the device. (note: make sure you empty the recycle bin after this step)

4. Copy the unlocked “gmapprom.img” file that you downloaded into the device. If the downloaded file is named something else, rename it to “gmapprom.img” and then put it on your device’s internal memory.

5. Restart your device and check your map info via : Tools>Settings>Map>Map Info.

Part B | SD Card

1. Get a 2GB SD card (OR SDHC if your device supports it) and format it FAT or FAT32

2. Create a folder on the memory card called “Garmin

3. Copy the downloaded IMG file into the Garmin folder on your SD card.

4. Make sure the IMG file is named “gmapsupp.img” on the SD card.

5. Insert the SD card into your Garmin GPS, and browse to your map information on your Garmin GPS and you should see the new maps selected. This can be found on the device via : Tools>Settings>Map>Map Info. (Note: The SD card must remain in your device if you want to use the maps.)

Why is the file name important?

This must be done because this is not the primary mapset as it is being used from the SD card. The primary mapset is the one on the GPS’s internal memory.

  1. By Ron Power, November 19, 2011 at 1:22 pm

    I have a 255W. Ran the web updater and used Method 2, Part A to load the unlocked image files USA (2012.30 USA) and Canada (2012.30 CAN). I named the USA file GMAPPROM.img and the Canada file GMAPSUPP.img. When I go to tools > settings > map > map info there is a box with a check mark and CN North America NT 2012.30 is next to it. Under that there is [1] Canada NT 2012.30 on one line and on the next line is [3] USA-Hawaii NT 2012.30. I can find U.S. addresses just fine, but when I do Where To> Address> Change State/Province I cannot switch to another country (i.e. Canada or Mexico). What gives? {Before I put the new maps in my option was Where To> Address> Change State/Country> Change Country then keyboard would appear and I could type in the country}

    • By Steve, November 19, 2011 at 10:31 pm

I don’t know why it says [3]USA-Hawaii NT 2012.30 because it should say [2]USA-Hawaii NT 2012.30. Why would it say 3 if there are only 2 maps? My 255w does have Address> Change State/Country.

    • By Chemical666, November 30, 2011 at 7:41 pm

Not completely sure but I think the solution to this problem is to name the second file gmapprom1.img instead of gmapsupp.img

      • By Steve, December 4, 2011 at 1:57 am

I tried this and it doesn’t change a thing the Garmin.

  2. By rezzor, November 24, 2011 at 5:07 pm

    First, thank you.

If anyone has any info about getting Europe maps, would really appreciate!!!

    • By Steve, November 24, 2011 at 7:52 pm

All maps can be found on Torrent search sites.

  3. By nick, November 26, 2011 at 4:07 pm

Thanks for the maps. Little problem. I have 255W. Installed us maps (2012.30 – renamed to gmapprom and canada maps (2012.30 – gmapsupp).

Both maps work, but not together. If I choose “change state/province” I cannot get any canada results, only US. If I uncheck the US maps in Tools>settings>maps>map info then I can search canada, but not US.

I could always get to the border, then switch maps as a workaround, but wonder if there is any way to have the maps work together?

    Thanks
    -Nick

    • By Steve, November 27, 2011 at 8:37 pm

I checked my 255W and I have Can as pprom and USA as supp and when I go to Address> Change State/Country I can only change to a different Prov and not to a State. I have both maps listed under North American NT which is checked off, I can’t check / uncheck the maps separately. I don’t know if once I am in USA it may automatically switch over and allow me to search USA addresses which is what it did before when I had a North America map.

      • By Steve, November 29, 2011 at 8:17 pm

On A 260 I put the Canada map (prom) in internal mem and USA as supp on a SD and the map info page looks exactly the same as my 255W but on the 260 I can search for USA and Can addresses unlike the 255. Strange.

  4. By Nhan, November 27, 2011 at 4:53 pm

I have a Garmin 1350T. I used Method 2, part A. But why does my GPS turn off every time I change the state?

  5. By Tyler, November 28, 2011 at 7:20 pm

Hey, the Garmin Unlocker and GMAP unlocker are on megaupload, which I can not seem to access. Any chance of a different file service for those?

  6. By Will, December 1, 2011 at 1:24 am

Okay, I don’t and never had a new gps. Bought a couple second hand. Well, I went to update, installed utorrent. Downloaded from Bttorrent, followed instructions on renaming file as gmapprom, when I put it on my zumo 550 sd card, it will not recognize it. I had to re-install the original and it work, but in settings, there is no option to choose the 2012 maps. So I tried with my nuvi 350 (deleted file off gps) installed several copies of the 2012 maps, and it will not show a file at all in the setting/map/map info sequence. I was wondering that is the mapsource cd which comes with garmin gps’s, necessary to have in order for these torrent download and installs to work? After 3 days, I am a bit baffled.

    • By Steve, December 2, 2011 at 12:15 am

You don’t need anything from Garmin to make the maps work. When you had your zumo connected to your PC did your confirm that the new map was in the SD card? Did your put it in a folder named “Garmin”? Connect to PC and confirm name, size and location of new map.

    • By Morris, January 11, 2012 at 8:39 pm

With the GPS turned on and card installed remove card and reinstall this worked for me on my Garmin 260W

  7. By jacob, December 2, 2011 at 2:03 pm

i tried everything from step 1 method 1 and 2 and it seems like map source never opens and i cant find a place to download map source

    • By Steve, December 4, 2011 at 1:00 am

Do method 2, no map source needed.

  8. By dumbasdirt, December 3, 2011 at 1:26 pm

I downloaded the 2012.20 torrent, and nowhere is there an “install.exe” nor a “source” folder. I have a 2720 device, so transferring an .img file is not an option, I’m getting. Do I have to have the 2012.10 file?

    • By Steve, December 4, 2011 at 2:11 am

First off Download the latest map not outdated maps and use method 2.

  9. By Wilson Tong, December 7, 2011 at 11:25 pm

Firstly, thank you very much for sharing this stuff!
I have a qq, after I downloaded 2012.30 America and deploy it via method 2 PARTA, I m able to load the map in 255W, but when I test it, I found the distance calculated is shorter than its actual distance. Do you know why or if I did correctly?

    • By Steve, December 8, 2011 at 1:05 am

As long as the 2012.30 map is listed in the Map Info page you have done it correctly. I have found the Garmins are often wrong in their locations and in their routing. Before I bought my 255W I had reviews on websites that had tested the garmins Vs the other brands and Garmin always won in their routing but when I tell my 255 to take me to to the other side of the city the stupid thing takes my down Main street all the way even thought fastest route is enabled. Sometimes it tells me my destination is on the left when it’s on the right. Sometimes it’s destination calculation is off by several 100 feet.

      • By Wilson Tong, December 8, 2011 at 10:03 am

It seems always happens…I used shorter distance mode to navigation and then it leaded me to somewhere unknown(actual 5miles away from right destination)…I had to my google map instead. I ‘ll try more testing and see if I need to change the map back…
        Thanks for reply!

  10. By av, December 8, 2011 at 6:20 am

method 2b is the easiest and best thing to do.

In the past you had a city navigator 2012.10 image file.
That contained the usa and canadian maps like a normal city navigator update is.

Instead of having usa and canada split like it is now, can you just keep them together?

would make it it alot easier for sure.

    just a suggestion

    • By Steve, December 8, 2011 at 2:47 pm

Method 2A & 2B are the same is far as ease of procedure but 2B is way faster using an SD card for file transfer. You could say 2A is easier since you don’t need an SD card. As far as combining the two maps, you can always just download the N.A map which is what I will do when 2012.40 comes out.

  11. By eleven, December 10, 2011 at 10:18 am

another year, another awesome update. many thanks!

  12. By Raja, December 13, 2011 at 1:08 am

I have garmin nuvi 360, and i didnt update so far since i bought this gps (2007). Do you think this update will give me cumulative and will work for my gps (nuvi 360) model. Please advice me.

    • By Steve, December 13, 2011 at 4:27 pm

Yes it should work so give it a try.

  13. By Mike, December 14, 2011 at 5:11 pm

Using Method 2b, I have tried both the 2012.20 and 2012.30 image files for my 250W. I changed the name of the downloads from 201220-usa-img.torrent and g201230-ul-img.torrent (respectively) to gmapsupp.img as directed, and copied each to the formatted SD card folder named “Garmin”.

In each case, the new maps do not show up in Map Info … only the old maps (I have the old City Navigator 2008 North America NT files).

What do you suggest? Should I try method 2a instead?

    Many thanks.

    • By Mike, December 14, 2011 at 5:56 pm

Hey – In addition to the above, I see that the downloaded img files are only about 20kb. That ain’t right (?)

      • By Mike, December 14, 2011 at 6:12 pm

^ Geez. Never mind. I just realized .torrent files are just links. I have Bittorrent running now and downloading the REAL img file.

        Sorry. Duh.

  14. By Mike, December 14, 2011 at 7:02 pm

Okay, another question – now that I have the new map loaded on the Nuvi, do I leave BOTH the old and the new maps checked? They were both checked when I powered up.

    Thanks!

    • By Steve, December 15, 2011 at 1:07 am

Uncheck old map or even better DEL it.

  15. By Mike, December 15, 2011 at 6:12 pm

    Thanks, Steve.

Well, I managed to get the maps loaded, but on some screens (those with a “keyboard” especially), the touchscreen is no longer synchronized with the display … in other words, when I touch a given key it selects the one above it. It even affects the + and – zoom keys on some screens.

I guess this isn’t related to the map load, although I didn’t notice it before. We have built-in nav in both cars, so this portable doesn’t get much use. If someone HAS seen this as a result of the updates, let me know!

    • By Steve, December 17, 2011 at 12:33 am

I have never heard of this problem before. All I can suggest is to check for any software updates.

  16. By JR, December 20, 2011 at 10:19 pm

Will these methods work with a kenwood/garmin dnx system? The update is with an sd card. Thanks

    • By HowdyKeith, December 31, 2011 at 4:01 pm

      Hi JR,
I have the DNX9960. I put the .30 unlocked supp map in the Garmin folder and no luck. i tried the .20 and even reformatting the card with fat instead of fat32, and no go.

I am disappointed. In RI Providence has changed so much since an update that i am always driving off the map and into rivers.

I am going to try the instructions for the old 2011 maps and see if that works.

      • By HowdyKeith, December 31, 2011 at 7:28 pm

        Me again.

So the Garmin 2011 GPS Update worked and I am now able to use 2011.40 instead of the old 2011.10. That’s better.
i haven’t gotten the 3d to show up yet, so i assume the newer junction view isn’t working yet either.

        • By HowdyKeith, December 31, 2011 at 7:53 pm

btw. You might be wondering how the heck to get the memory card in there.
I cut out a notch in a pencil eraser to stick the memory card into. Does that make sense? I feel like a genius for figuring it out.

  17. By mt, December 22, 2011 at 12:35 am

Jr, I have a kenwood dnx6160, I just copied the Garmin Unlocked IMG File to my 2gb micro sd, It appears to be working. It does recognize the maps.

    • By Angel, January 24, 2012 at 1:37 am

I just put the file IMG files.30 on my g510 and it seems to be working great! Very happy and it saved me a C note

  18. By Mrozzie, December 28, 2011 at 9:06 am

Hey would you be able to release a guide for Australian maps? I have a garmin nuvi 765t.

    • By Steve, December 30, 2011 at 3:06 pm

The guide would be the same you just need to download the 2012.30 unlocked map (276MB) , it’s out there.

  19. By EasyPlay, December 30, 2011 at 2:03 am

Here are the links that make up City Navigator North America NT 2012.20 IMG File unlocked after extracting. Just replace the one on your unit…ALL North America, Enjoy! No need to worry how to join US map with Canada map! Just use thisone!

Why post links to old outdated maps? 2012.30 is the one you want.

  20. By teebee, December 31, 2011 at 12:13 pm

For the Garmin Nuvi 350 North America which files are needed? Is it all of these? It’s not super clear which or if all are needed:

    Garmin City Navigator 2012.10, 2012.20
Garmin Unlocked IMG File | 2012.20 USA, 2012.30 USA, 2012.30 CAN

    Many thanks.

    • By Steve, January 1, 2012 at 9:17 pm

It seems very clear to me but then again I’m not your average fluoride head. You download the latest 2012.30 map.

  21. By Fred, January 2, 2012 at 9:54 pm

You can use GPMAPTOOLS to join or split map inages
    http://voyager8.blogspot.com/2.....-maps.html

    • By Steve, January 3, 2012 at 3:00 am

Cool find Fred. I have joined a Canada & USA map and I’ll try it out in my gps soon.

      • By Steve, January 5, 2012 at 11:39 pm

I tested the joined map and it’s working fine.

    • By labrat, January 3, 2012 at 10:19 pm

Great find! We will add this to the guide :)

  22. By av, January 4, 2012 at 2:21 am

Thanks for all the great work labrat.

Do you think you will have a North America City Navigator for the year2013 now?

An IMG file like you did with 2012.10 City Navigator that you had last year?
It was great and simple. Method 2B worked great.

This way you can get the Canada, USA map file just like you would when you update
    directly from garmin.

Instead of splitting the image into 2 pieces it would make it alot easier because I think you
can put both onto a 2Gig flash card still.

    • By Steve, January 5, 2012 at 11:42 pm

You could just join the Can & U.S map together like I just did. BTW a whole North America will fit on a 2GB card or internal memory.

  23. By Steve, January 5, 2012 at 11:52 pm

The 2013 map is not yet available, you must wait for the 2012.40 first.

  24. By av, January 6, 2012 at 2:00 am

    Yes Steve
I just downloaded the gmaptoolsetup 061

    I hope it’s in english.

so with this tool you combined the 2 image files for 2012.30 can and usa ?

    Everything is working good?

Maybe 2012.40 when it’s released will have ALL North America as one.

    Just saves a step.

Steve have you updated the points of interest also? My original garmin is streetpilot c550 and from 2009. so POI are very old.

You have any experience in this field? I just want newer points of interest that garmin
website offers as standard points even.

    • By Steve, January 7, 2012 at 3:06 pm

POIs are included in the maps and you can’t download them separately. You can make your own custom POIs and add them to your current ones. poi-factory.com has list of updated POI lists like, free wifi, Rest Areas, Walmarts, Starbucks ect…..

    • By Steve, January 8, 2012 at 12:43 am

You can always download the North American map and I have always done that in the past but this time I got the U.S & Can map just because it is a bit smaller. Like I said before a full N.A map will still fit in internal memory. Every type of Garmin map is available for download, you just have to find them which isn’t hard.

  25. By shop, January 6, 2012 at 2:23 am

You’ve got great insights about garmin gps, keep up the good work!

  26. By George, January 8, 2012 at 10:06 pm

Stupid question, but here ir goes…

How US and CAN files under Method 2A should be named ? Obviously, can not use the same name (gmapprom.img)…

    • By Steve, January 9, 2012 at 12:14 am

      One you will call gmapsupp.

      • By George, January 9, 2012 at 1:09 am

Does it make any differemce which one ?

        • By Steve, January 15, 2012 at 1:25 am

          No it doesn’t.

  27. By George, January 11, 2012 at 4:21 pm

I have a 200W. When I try to copy unlocked “gmapprom.img” to my device, I get a message that file is too big for destination drive. Any suggestions ?

  28. By Tommy, January 11, 2012 at 6:44 pm

I have a question on the garmin 2012 Map update. I have a Nüvi 200 and want to up date maps. In the instructions it states to extract downloaded files. I have 7-zip to do this but cant seam to get them to extract so I can see folders. What option in 7-zip should I use?
Also what do I need to do to find the source folder. I
#m new at this, but would like to learn how to update maps. Thanks for any help.

  29. By Alex, January 11, 2012 at 9:35 pm

Do you have POIS update for North America???

  30. By George, January 12, 2012 at 7:57 pm

Due to the fact that 200W does not have enough internal memory to hold 2012 maps, I followed Method 2B and copied new maps to formatted SD card (under “gmapsupp.img”), leaving the old ones in internal memory. When I reboot GPS, it only shows the old maps and no new ones… SD card is being recognized by my PC even when inserted in GPS.
    Suggestions ?

    • By Steve, January 15, 2012 at 1:30 am

Did you put it in a folder named Garmin? Did you use a 2GB SD? I would del the old map, you can always back it up on my PC first.

      • By George, January 15, 2012 at 2:46 am

Yes and yes. If I delete old map first, GPS do not fidn amy map after rebooting and basically is non-functioning.

        • By Steve, January 15, 2012 at 11:31 pm

So in the 200W on the map info page it doesn’t show the new map at all? If you plug the SD card with the new map on it to your PC are you able to see on your PC and confirm the name and size of the file?

          • By George, January 16, 2012 at 5:10 pm

No, it does not show new map at all. Yes, I can see a new map with the proper name and size on SD card when plugged in the PC.

  31. By Ben, January 16, 2012 at 11:37 am

If I have a second unit that has free lifetime maps (1450LMT) is it possible to use it to get the latest maps and then unlock them myself to put onto my other unit (755T)?

    • By Steve, January 16, 2012 at 6:47 pm

I don’t know I haven’t tried it but was wondering the same thing.

  32. By Gary C, January 17, 2012 at 3:11 am

    Hi, Steve
I am about to buy a Garmin 1450 at Amazon

I am wondering does 1450 have enough space to update the 2012.30? (seeing some websites saying that 1450 have only 2GB memory)
In order to save some space, may I only update the USA region?
In addition, I have seen someone saying that he cannot find gmapprom when he plug the device into the computer
    Thanks for helping

Like I have said in previous posts, the complete N.A 2012.30 map will fit in internal memory (2GB). You can always make some room by deleting languages and cars you will never use. Yes with the 1450 you will have to set windows to show hidden files & folders to see gmapprom.

    Steve,

Thanks for all this, much appreciated.

My 1490, although listed as 2gb internal is, in actuality, only 1.8gb, so even with clearing languages, etc., cannot handle NA2012.30 plus .JCV. Once I get a 2gb microSD for NA2012.30, does the current IMG need to remain on internal. Also, does the newer .JCV go on SD or internal [replace current]?

I had the full N.A 2012.20 in my 255W no problem, I don’t have JCV. Del old IMG, del old JCV and replace with new in internal.

    Hi Steve

The complete N.A 2012.30 map you said you have downloaded?
Or is this the combined canadian and usa image from up above and you used the software
    to combine the 2 maps.

Anyway you can post the combined map for us to download?

I want to use method 2B

See January 2 entry above for method to join img files.

Thanks for that. People don’t want to read the whole page/pages so they keep asking the same questions over and over. I won’t be answering the same question twice anymore.

Had the same problem with maps not showing USA address, cant change state…..
What I did was download this torrent (2012.30 full N.A map)
    http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/6831607
Follow the instructions from the torrent>

“Install Mapsource on the PC (NOT included)

Decompress with Winrar and copy the .gmap folder in:

    WindowsXP:
    C:\\Documents and Settings\\username\\Application Data\\GARMIN\\Maps

    Vista/Seven:
    C:\\ProgramData\\GARMIN\\Maps
(\\ProgramData is an hidden folder, unhide it before)

Start Mapsource, select the new map.

The installation and the maps are already unlocked.

    Have fun !!”

continue with step 4 of option 1 in the guide.
    Now, I can “Have fun”
    Hope this helps, Thanks hacklabs.

Hey – Megaupload is down… upload to another site plz :)

  37. By Steve, January 23, 2012 at 5:02 pm

The Feds raided Megaupload last week for violating copy writes but these maps are easily found on several other sites. If you can’t find them you haven’t looked very hard.

I noticed there is a newer JCV file (https://forums.garmin.com/showpost.php?p=103430&postcount=29) D3060030A.JCV.
It says there that it isn’t compatible with all models.
Of course I am going to try it and report back…

  39. By HowdyKeith, January 28, 2012 at 5:37 pm

Well it wont fit on my SD card so i guess that doesnt matter…
I will see get a 4 gig SD card and see if that works i guess.

Besides that, I am wondering where the newer 3dmap goes? I have two folders in the root of the SD, JCV and Garmin. If I put it in either the root or the Garmin folder the card doesn’t load.

Thanks again for all your help.

    Oh hi. Me again.
So that JCV is listed as being for the 2012.20 map img.
Now I see that the 2012.30 map img comes with this JCV file http://download.garmin.com/sup.....60040A.JCV .

  41. By HowdyKeith, January 29, 2012 at 9:55 am

I also see from reading every related post that I can find, that I am the only person who has to put the JCV folder in the root of the SD. But if I put the JCV folder in the Garmin folder it doesn’t load.
And nowhere else does it seem to be mentioned putting the 3d file anywhere but in the Garmin folder.

UNHACKABLE in the future? I bought a new Nuvi 40 over Christmas. I decided to check for the gmaprom.img file. It is NOT accessible any more! It doesn’t show up in the Windows Explorer (yes, I turned on “show hidden files”.) I then went into the command line tool to try DOS dir commands. Again it failed to find the .img file. There is something hidden in the GARMIN directory that displays “The parameter is incorrect”, instead of a file name (presumable an .img file)

Garmin is going to make it hard for hackers in the future. Hang on to your older nuvi GPS units, until some clever hacker comes up with a solution!

  43. By GC, January 30, 2012 at 3:21 am

    Never mind. I found it!
It’s kind of hidden in a directory named “.system”. You need to type this into the window’s explorer bar. E.g. ” D:\.system” Then it will show up.

FYI: I read the solution here: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?t=13575

anyone else had an issue trying to copy the gmapprom.img from the device to your computer to back it up? I’ve got a 265 that I’ve tried to copy the file off of. Three different pc’s and a mac, and I have the same problem each time. it will copy off around 750MB, but then the computer will stop…think with a message saying the file can’t be found, or the destination file isn;’t there.

I’ve tried gui copies, and from terminal and cmd prompts.

Anyone seen this, or a way around it?

    • By Steve, January 31, 2012 at 4:52 pm

Never had or heard of that issue.

  45. By HowdyKeith, January 31, 2012 at 9:47 pm

    and i’m back.
With the 4 gig card I was able to put the newest JCV folder in the Garmin folder and it worked just fine.
Strangely the 3d file in the Garmin folder does not show up on the nfo screen. It does load the card just fine, but seems to be ignored. In this case two out of three is a win.
Also holding the eject button for five seconds does lower the face so the SD card is easily accessed.

    Thanks again…

And btw, the newer 750 meg JCV file is awesome. The level of detail is amazing. Now I can see trees and other road structures.

  47. By SAM, February 7, 2012 at 4:14 am

I have the NA map NT 2012.20 downloaded tried on Garmin ( 200, 205, & 250 ) all second hand.
My problem is 2 … 1 . the files are too big for these devices. 2. I could not get to work on the
Jcv & 3D. I found NA maps 2011 small size and loaded and all of them work.
I can not thank enough to all those people who worked hard to help those of us who can not
afford to pay the full price every year.
There’s no space par on the gps when you are typing some thing. I do not know if its the
device or the software. Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks again

It appears 2012.40 is out in torrent form. I wonder how to take the map install and create a gmappsupp.img file?

The new 751 meg JCV file is here: http://download.garmin.com/sup.....60050A.JCV

  49. By HowdyKeith, February 11, 2012 at 3:10 pm

Thank goodness for Google… Finding an unlocked 2012.40 was very easy.

  50. By Steve, February 11, 2012 at 8:26 pm

I have installed 2012.40, well just the States and Provinces I want anyway. I will go for a drive tonight and try it out.

    • By Steve, February 12, 2012 at 3:02 pm

Seems to be working fine and now I can search U.S addresses which i couldn’t do before.
