FAQ

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN METHOD 1 & 2

Method 1 – To be used if you would like to customize the maps on your unit to specific areas.

Method 2 – To be used if you want the entire map data available on your unit (novice friendly)

WHAT ARE TORRENTS?

Don’t know how to use .torrent files? We won’t judge you (maybe)!

Follow these instructions to get started.

Method 1 (MapSource Install Instructions) – PC Only

Based on feedback from our visitors, we have worked on simplifying this method for an easy install process. The instructions for 2012 MapSource install now look different from previous releases.

The 2013.30 MapID is 2775

Note: The downloaded files contain map source, lane assist full (all areas), and 3d map unlocked full (all areas) in individual compressed archives, so select only what you need, Garmin MobileXT users don’t need the 3d map or the lane assist files.

Once the files have been downloaded, extract them as you will need to choose the appropriate folders based on your choice below.

Choose one of the following options:

Option One (Unlocked Maps)

1. Extract the contents of the torrent you downloaded using 7-Zip or any other unrar-tool

2. Once extracted, run “Mapsource.exe” and create your map

Note: No installation needed, Mapsource will create a folder called “Garmin” on the C:\ Drive.  This folder will contain the file “gmapsupp.img” which is the unlocked map file created by your specifications.

Option Two (Unlock using *.UNL file)

1. Copy the folder “\2013.10 Source\City Navigator North America NT 2013.10.gmap\” to “C:\Documents and Settings\(USER)\Application Data\Garmin\Maps”

2. Run the install.exe file from  ”\map source 6.15.6.0\install.exe”

3. Launch MapSource and choose the maps that you would like on your device on follow the on screen instructions

4. Use “\garmin map unlocker\unlocker.exe” to generate your maps unlock code. Alternatively, you may also use the Garmin Unlocker provided at the beginning of this guide.

Once completed, if you want to remove Mapsource files from your system:

Delete > C:\Documents and Settings\(USER)\My Documents\My Garmin
Delete > C:\Documents and Settings\(USER)\Application Data\Garmin\Maps

Method 2 (Unlocked IMG) – All Platforms

Use either Part A or Part B depending on your choice:

Part A | Internal Memory

1. Connect your device to the computer.

2. Go into the Nuvi files and backup the file named “gmapprom.img” to your computer.

3. Delete the “gmapprom.img” file from the device. (note: make sure you empty the recycle bin after this step)

4. Copy the unlocked “gmapprom.img” file that you downloaded into the device. If the downloaded file is named something else, rename it to “gmapprom.img” and then put it on your device’s internal memory.

5. Restart your device and check your map info via : Tools>Settings>Map>Map Info.

Part B | SD Card

1. Get a 2GB SD card (OR SDHC if your device supports it) and format it FAT or FAT32

2. Create a folder on the memory card called “Garmin

3. Copy the downloaded IMG file into the Garmin folder on your SD card.

4. Make sure the IMG file is named “gmapsupp.img” on the SD card.

5. Insert the SD card into your Garmin GPS, and browse to your map information on your Garmin GPS and you should see the new maps selected. This can be found on the device via : Tools>Settings>Map>Map Info. (Note: The SD card must remain in your device if you want to use the maps.)

Why is the file name important?

This must be done because this is not the primary mapset as it is being used from the SD card. The primary mapset is the one on the GPS’s internal memory.

Extra Requested Files (Only works on devices that support this feature)

Hi, I’ve just bought a 2595LMT, and it auto updated first time I connected it to the net. Can this model be “Hacked” to show the 3D buildings? I added the gmap3d.img file into the correct folder, but they show as flat 2D dark grey shadows.

  2. Greg says:

Help! I have deleted the gmapprom.img file according to instructions, but when I try to delete the file from the trash folder it just replaces the deleted file with a copy of the file. I cannot copy the new file over because it runs out of room saying there is not enough space. I cannot restore my backup file for the same reason and so now I have no map.

    • Greg says:

Update. This was happening under Linux. I tried it under Windows and had no problem deleting the files in the Trash folder. However, the 2013 file was too big for my device so I had to reload my backup file, so no update for me.

  3. Loco says:

I have a Garmin Nuvi 1300 that I bought in 2010 and I’ve never updated it. Is it safe for me to go right ahead and install this 2013.10 update? Or should I go go through the steps of installing 2011 and 2012 first? All I need is North America update. Thanks.

    • Steve says:

Go ahead and install 2013.30. It’s not an update it’s a new map, that’s why you uninstall the old map before installing a new one.

    • Greg says:

I didn’t have any sucess because the file is too large for the device. I deleted a bunch of language files, etc. and still didn’t have enough disk space to hold the 2013 IMG file.

      • Steve says:

Did you del your vehicles as well (you just need 1). You may have to make a custom map with mapsource which is very easy and faster to load since the maps I make are under 500MB.

      • Cpu says:

If you can load mapsource onto a pc and then load your map into it you should be able to select part of the map and transfer it into your device. Most of us only need about 5% of the whole map anyway, but reducing the amount of the map selected could solve your space problem and get you the updated map you want, I know it solved it for me and an older unit that didn’t have the space for the full map. I just loaded the states I needed.

  4. khaled says:

how create map if i use the unlocked maps ( MapSource) please ?

  5. Loco says:

I seriously just don’t the instructions here, this is my issue. My Garmin Nuvi 1300 has 1.76GB of space, my file North America NT 2013.30 is 1.79GB. I want to make a custom map to reduce the new file size, since I don’t have an SD card to use. I wanted to make it an internal install, but this is seriously starting to piss me off. I downloaded MAPSOURCE 6.16.3 and it doesn’t open the 2013.30 file. Can someone tell me what am I doing wrong?

    • Steve says:

Go on TPB and download the patched version of MAPSOURCE 6.16. You can get maps there also. You can also just DL the US map or Canada or whatever………..

      • Loco says:

I did downloaded, I just don’t know how to use it. There’s no tutorials online for it, not that I could find anyways. Open Mapsource, Click File, followed by Open. Then what? I press on (View All Files) and searched for the gmapsupp.img file image but it doesn’t take work. Tells me that the file is invalid…I downloaded the 2013.30 Full North America map only, no other country. All I want is the file size to be smaller, and all I need is the US North East Coast, that’s all…

        • Steve says:

Why don’t you just DL the U.S map because that should fit. My GPS is in the car and I’d have to hook it up to the PC so I could remember every step to make a map. It only takes 2min to start the process. I just open mapsource, the map is already selected, open, select States and hit Create or something.

        • Steve says:

Go to TPB and DL Garmin City Navigator North America NT 2013.30 Unlocked for Mapsource with –>
          the CNNANT2013_30Update.msi file

          • Loco says:

HOLY SHIT MAN! I FUCKING LOVE YOU BRO! LMAO! Finally!!!!! Damn it, I haven’t had this much difficulty solving a problem in a long time, haha. Again, Thank You so very much! Fuck yea..

Had a Garmin Nuvi 1300 2011.10 & now it’s updated to 2013.30. For those that wanted to know my garmin model name.

          • Blake says:

the file was easily found on TPB. I had to read through some Q & A to figure out why I get it to work, but this was the most useful post in comment section ( Also if you don’t see the gmapprom.img file, type in H:/.system and it should pull right up. For some reason the “.System” folder was hidden ) Thank you very much for putting this info out there. You sir, are a saint!

          • LMV says:

I already downloaded the unlocked img file and the updated mapsource and installer but need the msi since it didn’t make the registry files and mapsource is still not seeing it. Is there anyway to get the CNNANT2013_30Update.msi?

            Thanks

  6. Timm129 says:

Wow … Your maps are VERY current. Thanks for the 2013.30 ……

  7. trevor says:

what is the city navigator for? do I need to install it on the gps?

  8. Bob says:

If I follow Method 2, Part B, and put the “gmapsupp.img” file on an SD card do I need to delete the existing “gmapprom.img” file in the internal memory of the device?

  9. Matt says:

If I have a 4GB SD (not SDHC) card, will that work on a Nuvi 760? Or does it have to be 2GB?

  10. Please Help Me says:

    Hi:

I have read all 209 comments more than three times but unfortunately didn’t find the answer.

Here what I have done – At first, I have downloaded five (5) .rar files from Garmin City Navigator 2013.10 (mirror 2) and extracted those files by 7-zip. It created one folder named “Mapsource”, which contains one folder named “Maps” and Mapsource.exe. When I open Mapsource.exe, I cannot save file as mentioned above “Note: No installation needed, Mapsource will create a folder called “Garmin” on the C:\ Drive. This folder will contain the file “gmapsupp.img” which is the unlocked map file created by your specifications”.

If I choose Method 2 Part A, I don’t find “Copy the unlocked “gmapprom.img” file that you downloaded into the device. If the downloaded file is named something else, rename it to “gmapprom.img” and then put it on your device’s internal memory.” @ Steve – I already read June 29 comments, but didn’t find the file named gmapprom.img. Moreover, my computer shows hidden files and folders.

Where is the gmapprom.img file for 2013.10 maps? What did I miss? Please help me. Thanks in advance!

    • Steve says:

Problem 1: You read all these comments here but you are still trying to install an obsolete 2013.10 map. 2> I don’t get my maps from this site so if you are I can’t help you, I have already said where I go for maps.

  11. Bryan says:

Why do all the links you list for download go to sites that want you to upgrade to get any kind of decent service? I’m not up for paying some schmuck money just to be able to download a torrent. Not on the internet, and not in 40 lifetimes.

I have t large files of maps that I already got off pirate bay and another torrent site:
1)Garmin Mapsource City Navigator North America NT 2013.30
2)City Navigator North America NT 2012.10 IMG
The unlocker I downloaded from this page and that was no problem.

    What else do I need?

    Thanks

    • Steve says:

You completed step 1: Download the latest map. Then you downloaded the 2012.10 map which was useful back in 2011. Then you downloaded a Unlocker for some unknown reason. Now you need the install the 2013.30 map in the Garmin.

      • Bryan says:

Thanks. I downloaded all those extra files just in case I couldn’t get the proper ones. I got the unlocker because it was on the list at the top of the page and thought I needed it. I’ll be able to try this out on my dads gps soon. I’ll let you know how it goes. I’m sure it will be fine. :) thank you so much.

  12. Anon says:

Does this work with the Garmin Nuvi 40?

  13. Jeff says:

Hi I have the Garmin nuvi 200 with the 09 maps and need to update. Now what files must I download? All of the highlighted ones on top? I guess I only need the US east coast maps.

    • Steve says:

The links for the map on this site are just North America and will not fit on a 200 anyway. If you want just want East Coast U.S then you will have to make a custom map.

  14. sam says:

Hi, I have a garmin 3750 and how can I copy the gmapprom to it if the path is I:/.system, and the system folder is not showing.

  15. Bryan says:

The img file is too large to fit on my device.. I need to either free up about 160MB of space on my device, or make a smaller custom map. What files can I safely delete?

    AND

How do I go about making a custom map? I did some research, and nothing seemed very helpful. I have basecamp installed on my computer, but don’t know where to go from there.
    thanks

    • Steve says:

You don’t need Basecamp. You could just install USA-Hawaii-Alaska NT 2013.30 which may fit. I have already said where to get the maps and what to delete to make space on your Garmin. Another option is to use a 2GB SD card.

  16. Guy says:

I downloaded an unlocked file. It was too big, so re downloaded just the US-Alaska-Hawaii one.. It fit, but it was named gmassup.img.. I loaded into the .system where I removed and deleted the original file.. Then I renamed it like in the instructions to gmapprom.img.. But when I turn on the GPS, (nuvi 1300) It does not find the map file.. What is wrong?? What can I change??

    • Steve says:

Try renaming it back to gmapsupp. Either name works in my experience it doesn’t matter.

      • Guy says:

I have tried it both ways. When I turn the GPS on, it does not recognize the map. So not sure why its not seeing it there.. I have the US one and saved it in the .system folder.. in the internal files.. but its just not recognizing it.

      • Jazz says:

Sweet! I am copying the old gmapsupp.img to my PC now before deleting the original on the nuvi. I had done this once years ago, and couldn’t remember that there was a different .img file name on my unit. Then I should be able to install the new map.

  17. Steve says:

Did you put the map in the Garmin folder in the Nuvi and not in any other folder?

    • Guy says:

I put it in the .system folder where the other one was deleted from.. Does it go in the Garmin folder?? Maybe that is why the GPS is not finding it.. but I figured it would go where the one that was deleted.

      • Steve says:

The Garmin’s that I update are different than the 1300. As long as it’s in the same place as original then that’s right. So you downloaded an unlocked map and drag & dropped it on correct? Did you get it from TPB?

  18. Angelo says:

I have installed the Garmin Unlocked IMG File 2013.30 into my nuvi 255W and works fine….the only problem I could find was that sometimes when I turn it on doesn’t load de 2013.30 map (runs the old one in the internal memory)…I eject the SD card and wait for a minute and then works ok…could it be a problem of my sd card, right?

  19. Av says:

Is there a 2013.40 ing or 2014 city navigator North America released ?

I would like to put the entire city navigator on a 4 gig sd card
    Partb
Anyone know what is the latest file and where to download from ?

  20. Guy says:

Hey Steve, I did drop and drag it in the same place as the original map file was.. What is TPB?? I tried the file on this page but could not get it to download.. Had to get it from another source. But every time i turn the GPS on.. nothing.. it says i have no map.. but I look in the file, and its there.. So I don’t have a clue on what’s going on.. Maybe its a locked file.. I don’t know..

  21. Guy says:

I used the unlocked img file from this page. downloaded and put it where the old one used to be. when I turn on the GPS, it shows in the map info a C with a circle.. That’s it. Is it supposed to show 2013?? And I know what TPB is.. But could not download it from there.. I tried the torrent on here and used one of the choices it give you…

  22. marie-eve says:

When I copy the file in the file gmapprom my gps, he said lack of space. I simply remove vehicles and languages and I still miss the place, is there anything else I could simply remove?

    • Steve says:

No that’s all you can safely remove. You may need to download a smaller map like just USA, custom make your own map or use a 4GB SD card.

  23. SteveO says:

The most current JVC file (JVC D30960080A.JVC) for 2013.30 can be found here:

  24. Batch says:

Steve, I’m not sure what i’m doing wrong but I think I’m not finding the right mapsource.exe or the correct .img that will work with mapsource.
    I’m running mapsource 6.16.3.0.
When i try to open my img it says its not able to open it like it’s the wrong format.
One time i tried installing the city navigator and it did open a map automatically for me but i was unable to make a custom map because it said it was locked. I’ve searched tpb and other torrents but have not located the Garmin City Navigator North America NT 2013.30 Unlocked for Mapsource with –>
the CNNANT2013_30Update.msi file dl you spoke of, maybe this is the problem because everything I’ve tried I’ve run into dead ends. I’ve also tried the us/Hawaii map put it’s still 1.5g which is too big for the 870.

  25. baz says:

Firstly, thanks so much for all your efforts here!
Just to be clear, since in the past I’ve done method 2 updates.
The Full NA Map is too large for my 265w. What I’d like to do is use the US Map, & the Canada map, which would probably fit.
Do I use Mapsource (from Garmin website) or BaseCamp (which is in the rar), to merge the files?
    Thanks for any help!

  26. Steve says:

BTW the North America NT 2013.40 is out.

  27. baz says:

    Thanks, Steve… really appreciated!

  28. Timm129 says:

    Hello Steve
Can you post a link to the unlocked .img file for 2013.40???

    Thanks

  29. Maria says:

Hi, i am clueless when it comes to computers, so i apologize if you have already answered this but can i do this update if i am using a macbook?

  30. rich says:

    Steve,
Do you know if this configuration will work with both maps, depending on where I’m located:
-primary map on gps [nuvi 1490] as gmapprom.img, along with .jcv
    AND
-secondary map on SD card as gmapsupp.img [due to capacity limit on GPS]
[e.g., primary=Canada, secondary=US; will GPS tracking/mapping switch from gmapprom to gmapsupp as I travel from Canada to US?]
    Thanks

  31. Guy says:

Do you happen to know if that 3D GMap is adaptable to the nuvi 40?

  32. Darek says:

    Hi Steve !
I downloaded and installed to my Dezl 560 this file and it works, but I lost my lane assist or I should say Junction View function.Do You know which JCV file I need to make it work again and do I have to delete the old one ? Right now I have D 3191010A.sum and D3191020A.JCV in the JCV folder but after 900 miles trip my GPS didn’t show me even one picture. Can You help ? Thanks in advance!

  33. Darek says:

Oops I don’t see in my comment above the name of the file ,sorry I did installed NT 2013.40 Unlocked

  36. Git says:

I actually have a lifetime update for a Zumo 550 – but I also have a couple of in dash units (kenwood) that I have been able to successfully unlock in the past.

The last time I updated them using the download for the Zumo was over a year ago. Now when I try the same method, I get an error on the Kenwood unit that the map is locked. Does anyone know how to unlock the maps that are downloaded straight from Garmin? – They end up in a folder with several subfolders and it looks like most of the files are a .gmp format. When I try to use an older version of MapSource (6.15.7) with my generated codes I get an error: “Map product not installed”

  37. marushka says:

Hi Steve not sure if you can help so I downloaded the latest map from tpb the 2013.40 , i have the 265w garmin, I transfered the map on a 2g sd card, had it formated before using it, drag the file under garmin folder name and renamed gmapsupp.img and when i open gps and go into setting map and maps info it only shows my 2011 map and not the recent i tried renaming it and still nothing, any ideas on what to do because it seems simple download the torrent and rename and stick it to sd card and gps
    thanks in advance

  38. Andy says:

Did you do this step? Method 2 (unlocked IMG), Part A (Internal Memory), STEP # 3.

  39. marushka says:

I did method 2 part b becaused my internal gps space is too small, so not sure what im doing wrong

  40. marushka says:

this is what i downloaded from tpb “Garmin City Navigator North America NT 2013.40 UNLOCKED”????

    • Andy says:

From the site you mentioned you have the option to download the maps you require for 2013.40img unlocked. Canada map formatted gmapprom.img put into the GP’s internal memory and a USA Hawaii Alaska map (without all the islands and Mexico) formatted gmapsupp.img put on a 2 G SD card. Follow the instructions for method 2 Part A & Part B.

  44. Derek says:

Quick question folks. I am downloading the “Garmin City Navigator North America NT 2013.40 UNLOCKED” file from TPB now. I understand how to get the map file onto my Zumo 660, the question I have is will MapSource update to the new 2013.40 map or is there another map file I need to download specifically for MapSource?

This is the first time I have updated my Zumo since buying it in 2011. Do I need the 3Dmaps as well? Is that just as easy as copying the files to the Zumo as well?

    Thanks for all your help!

  45. Akanox says:

    Hello.

Could you share a link for the EU version?

  46. Jackie says:

I tried this on my iQue M5 (why buy new—it still works)
I checked map info. My SD card showed both the Base Map and the 2013 detail map.
unfortunately, in the “Detaild maps drawn” are it said no detailed maps found.

Any ideas on getting my M5 to find the detailed maps on my SD card?
